What is an Anal Fistula? What Causes It?
An anal fistula is a small tunnel that forms between the skin and the end of the digestive tract, known as the anus. The primary cause is often an infection in an anal gland, leading to the development of the fistula.
This condition can result in persistent pain, discomfort, and other challenges. Symptoms of this condition include:
- Painful swelling that worsens over time when left untreated
- Skin irritation around the anus, including swelling, redness, and tenderness
- Discharge of pus
The Hidden Struggle of Anal Fistulas
While the reasons some individuals are more susceptible to this infection remain unclear, it’s noteworthy that approximately 25% to 30% of patients grappling with anal abscesses ultimately progress to developing an Anal Fistula.
Living with anal fistulas means contending with persistent pain and discomfort, especially during bowel movements. Daily activities become challenging, impacting your overall well-being. Hygiene maintenance becomes difficult with persistent drainage or discharge. Moreover, the constant threat of infection can exacerbate pain, swelling, and complications. Don’t let this silent struggle control your life.
